Domaine de la Prose Vermentino
10 minutes away from downtown Montpellier and 6 miles from the Mediterranean Sea, Bertrand de Mortillet farms 17 hectares of vines in the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation of St. Georges d’Orques. The soils in this corner of the Languedoc consists primarily of clay, limestone and scree, over which a patchwork of different varieties from Vermentino to Syrah are cultivated.
Bertrand’s parents Alexandre & Patricia helped establish Domaine de la Prose, and they exacted considerable influence in their recommendation that Vermentino be planted here. With family roots and long time winemaker friends in Corsica, Alexandre found the soils and climate in St. Georges d’Orques to be very similar to Patrimonio where Vermentino does so well. After formal viticultural studies in Bordeaux, Bertrand's first harvest at Domaine de la Prose was in 1995. Since then, he has managed the estate and taken Domaine de la Prose to new heights.
All of the grapes at the domaine are manually harvested, carefully sorted and transported a short distance back to the winery. Vinification for both red and white is through a gravity flow system in order to ensure freshness. The wines range from racy and crisp, to modestly oaked. Domaine de la Prose has been organically certified since 2004. With the 2016 vintage, all wines from Domaine de la Prose will be Demeter certified.
